Here are our Winter Classes!

MONDAYS

BEGINNER KNITTING - POINT GREY
With Deanna Krushinsky
Have fun learning the basics of knitting.  This is a techniques based class where you learn to cast on and off, knit, purl, increase, decrease and whatever else you have time to do!  Follow this with the Beyond Beginner Class.
Mondays 7:00-9:00pm
March 2, 9, 23, & 30

Cost: $95.00 + GST (Material’s Extra)
Supply Requirements: 5-8 mm straight needles and yarn to match. Ask us to help choosing your yarn.

BEGINNER CROCHET- POINT GREY
With Deanna Krushinsky
Learn the basics of crochet with stitches such as the slip stitch, single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet, and triple crochet, increasing & decreasing, and crocheting in the round.  You will also learn chaining, and working back and forth in rows from a foundation chain. If time, basic pattern reading skills will be taught. Most will have time to start some sort of beginner project, or you can make swatches and turn them into a scarf in the end.

February 2, 9, 16, & 23

Cost: $95.00 + GST (Materials Extra)
Supply Requirements:  Crochet hook (5mm) and DK weight yarn to match.  Wool or Acrylic is best as opposed to cotton or novelty yarn.
*The Happy Hooker Book by Debbie Stoller is a great resource book.

TUESDAYS

SOCK BOOT CAMP - POINT GREY
Learn to knit a sock in just one night! Basic knitting skills are required. You will knit a top-down, mini training sock on 4 DP needles by the end of the class. An educational "Sock Knitting" handout and free sock pattern will be included.

$25 + GST (materials extra)
Supply requirements: 3.25mm DP needles, aran weight yarn. You will knit your sample sock with this. You will also need 2.25mm DP needles and reuglar sock weight yarn for you actual sock.

FAIR ISLE MITTENS - POINT GREY
With Alexa Ludeman
Already mastered the knit and purl? Ready to try some more adventurous colour work? This is the class for you! You will learn to make an I-cord cast on, and fair isle knitting techniques. These charming mitts are also lined, so we will learn how to attach the lining to the mitt.

Supply requirements: Fiddlehead Mitten pattern from www.helloyarn.com or White Witch mitten pattern from Blue Sky Alpacas plus yarn & needles to match.

Now that you’ve learned the basic’s of knitting, and can’t wait to make a project, come join the beyond beginner knitting class.  From learning to read a pattern, to finishing techniques, Sandra will coach you through the obstacle course of your first garment.
Supply Requirements: basic pattern of your choice, and the yarn and needles that it specifies.  Ask us for assistance with this.

ARAN BLOCK OF THE MONTH - EDGEMONT
With Sandra Dunkin
This class runs over 7 months, starting with simple twist patterns, and progressing to more advanced cable work each month. You will start a new block each month during class time, and complete it at home. The last class is for finishing your gorgeous project. Please be sure to come in early to pick your yarn to ensure we have the correct quantities of your favourite.

ROLLING THUNDER FINGERLESS GLOVES - POINT GREY
With Sivia Harding
The Rolling Thunder Glove is an original design by Sivia Harding, based on the Rolling Thunder Sock that appeared in the Winter 2006 issue of Knitty.com.  This beautiful fingerless gauntlet glove contains several interesting techniques:  a provisional cast on and knitted-in hem, strung beads which embellish the cuff of the glove, a ribbed and fitted wrist and hand, garter stitch thumb gusset, and a completely custumizable fit.  The pattern is sized for women’s medium and large.  The glove is knit in the round on either double pointed or circular needles, size 2.25 mm

Supply Requirements:  100 grams of fingering weight yarn such as Koigu, Malabrigo or Fleece Artist Sock yarn. Solid or semi-solid colours are best. 280 size 8/0 seed beads.  You can find this size of seed bead at Beads Works in Granville  Island, but not many other places. Pattern will be provided.

CHRISTA'S PAINLESS PROJECTS - POINT GREY
With Christa Giles
Weekly session suitable for anyone who can cast-on, knit, purl, and cast off. Students will be working on their own project, but eavesdropping is encouraged.  This is also suitable for people wanting to learn new techniques, or who want to finish a project.
Please Note* the focus of this class is to coach people through their stumbling blocks, or to work on design. – This is not a beginner class.

KNITTING Q & A - POINT GREY O

With Astor Tsang INT GREY
Bring your projects and question’s to this quiet and semi-private lesson (Min.2, Max.3 people), for help with pattern reading, complicated stitches, or finishing work. You must reserve your spot by the preceding Thursday.

YARN 101  -  POINT GREY
With Astor Tsang
Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by Urban Yarn’s magnificent selection of yarns?  Are you mystified by yarn substitutions?  Well here is a workshop for you.  Astor from knittingAstor.com will give you a tour of the yarn in the shop, discussing materials, gauge, and yarn substitutions. 
Optional:  bring patterns you love and challenge Astor to find you the perfect yarn.

ARAN BLOCK OF THE MONTH - POINT GREY

With Sandra Dunkin
Please ensure you have ordered your yarn at least 2-3 weeks prior to the starting date of class to ensure we have sufficient quantity of your favorite yarn! Supply requirements: 2,259 meters of aran weight yarn (Mission Falls 1824 washable wool is a great choice - you will need 30 balls of this yarn).

Registrations will close for this class after the Nov 2nd class.

DON'T SEE WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR? 
GET A FEW FRIENDS TOGETHER AND WE'LL CUSTOMIZE A CLASS FOR YOU.   Those of you who have expressed interest in more challenging techniques may want to try lace techniques, for example. 

Private Classes are available.
$20 for ½ hour
$40 for 1 hour
For those with specific needs, we are happy to help. Bring a friend and the cost is the same. Please reserve at least 48 hours in advance.

Class Materials Discount
As an Urban Yarns class student you will receive a 10% discount on yarn purchased for your class projects.

Class Policy

1. Payment in full is required to reserve a class spot.
2. We have a 72 hour cancellation policy.  Your payment will not be refunded unless you cancel at least 72 hours in advance of the first class.
3.
If there are fewer than 5 students registered in a class 72 hours before the class is scheduled to start we reserve the right to change class dates or cancel the class. If a change in dates does not work for you or the class cannot be rescheduled we will happily refund your class fees.
4. If you cancel with at least 72 hours notice you will be fully refunded or transferred to another session. No refunds will be given less than 72 hours before (or during) a class session.
5. You MUST have your receipt to be refunded.
